Handmade Wooden Kinetic Sculpture, Spring-Wound Moving Wall Art | Thrascher

This handmade wooden kinetic sculpture is designed as wall art to be viewed both at rest and in motion. Wind its spring to set the gears and front and rear wheels moving through changing patterns, accompanied by gentle mechanical sounds. It can make a distinctive gift for friends, family, or art enthusiasts, and is suited to quiet focus or meditation.

Features

• A continuously wound spring powers the sculpture; winding sets its mechanism in motion.
• The wheels move back and forth in different patterns, with rotational speeds that can vary during operation.
• Some designs combine fan-like unfolding shapes with expanding forms and flickering movement. More complex, asymmetrical wheel designs use a more predictable movement pattern to make their patterns easier to follow.
• The designs were developed through experiments with spring counts, thicknesses, and angles, followed by animation simulation and physical movement tests. Adjustments to balance and the calculated center of mass helped refine the movement.

Run time

Run time varies by design and winding. No fixed run time is specified for these three patterns.

Specifications

• Material: Wood
• Patterns: Spiral Blades, Open Loops, or Interwoven Loops
• Size: 35 × 0.8 cm
• Weight: 300–580 g

Preparation and finish

Preparation includes cutting, polishing, and coating the wood. The sculpture is movement-tested, then checked and adjusted if needed. A shiny paint coat enhances its appearance and protects the artwork from pests and mold.
